Morpurgo has retold the tale in twisting, long-winded sentences that call to mind the way in which old epics were recounted by poets and bards. The tale has been divided into three segments: the story of the monster Grendel's defeat the slaying of his mother, the sea-hag and the battle with the death dragon of the deep. Grade 7 Up–Morpurgo retells the classic story of the courageous young warrior from the land of Geats (now southern Sweden) who used his brute strength to save the neighboring Danes, then his own kinsmen, by slaying two horrible monsters, a sea serpent, and a massive dragon. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Pamela Guillard San Francisco Chronicle Dazzling.I find myself filled With such high praise for this book that instead of relating paltry bits of it, I want to quote the whole glorious thing.Doig plunges right in and, while giving us a gorgeous story, simultaneously peels that tale back to expose, the nubbins of human despair - injustice, failure, and that incalculable restlessness exemplifled by the immigrant. Dancing at the Rascal Fair races with real vigor and wit and passion. Doig addresses his real subject: love between friends, between the sexes, between the generations. His is a prose as tight as a new thread and as special as handmade candy. Can I ask a stupid question Why would we be likely to hear French in this. Abbott The New York Times Book Review Against this masterfully evoked backdrop. I enjoyed listening to it on the radio, but the reviews were absolutely terrible. Ivan Doig is a master at description, and this novel is peopled by interesting, well-developed characters. In fact, it’s been a while since I read a book as well written as this one. Henry Kaisor Chicago Sun-Times Doig's prose is so muscular and sculpted, so simple and purposeful that I can think only of Edward Hoagland and Wallace Stegner as Doig's equals. It's been noted by other reviewers, and I agree that Dancing at the Rascal Fair is more than just a novel it's a piece of literature. The central volume in Ivan Doigs accled Montana trilogy, Dancing at the Rascal Fair is an authentic saga of the American experience at the turn of this. The struggle for Jackson and Faith was real. Haven was light on the angst, high on the eroticism whilst setting a realistic and terrifying mood of life after we’ve destroyed our Earth. The thrill of danger and finding love in scary territories really appeals to me. I am a huge fan of post-apocalyptic romances. With sex as their current outlet, Faith and Jackson will need to navigate a new path if they want a future together. The pressures of staying safe, sourcing supplies and growing food to sustain a community eventually takes it's toll. As it stands, this had already been Faith and Jackson’s home, yet now they shoulder the responsibility of leadership together as they try and run a safe place for rebuilding lives.
